Kayne's Review of Nikon Buckmasters 4-12X40 BDC Rifle Scope

About six, seven years ago I was looking for a well priced scope with decent enough mag and front lens diameter to stick on my Tikka T3 hunter, .223 calibre. As Nikon have a second to none reputation for quality at a good price (like most things Japanese), I ended up ordering a Nikon Buckmaster 4-12 X50 and a set of those Talley "fixed one piece" rings to suit. This was going to be my go to gun I'd do 80% of my shooting with, no show piece just a old faithful I could lug around and loan to my brother, old man, etc from time to time and not worry too much about. So I took time to lap the rings (the Talley rings are awesome - but I do suspect they need to be lapped to work proper) and set it up good.

THIS SCOPE IS THE BUSINESS. What a total gem. It's just pure quality, and near dirt cheap. Since owning this scope I've purchased a Bushnell Legend Ultra HD (not a bad unit) and a Vortex Viper HS (nice scope, a bit fancy...) and I can tell you although they are in the same ball park as the Nikon that cost less than half as much, I assure you the Buckmaster is the better scope. The glass is clearly superior. I've had this thing saturated out in the bush many times, something I like to AVOID, but it's caused no probs. Although i really like this Vortex Viper I have I will be certainly panicking if i get caught in the rain with it.... I just cannot fault the Nikon.

ONE THING i will point out, for the price it was never going to be perfect, this scope has some very funny light gathering qualities right on dusk, when the sun is really low. It might not be a bother in North America, the sun sets a little different, but if you get a real big bright blazing sun at dusk looking through this scope it can be challenging, looking in any direction. And this has cost me a couple of foxes I will admit, however I like the things i love to have a small forgivable flaw ha ha - who wants something that is perfect!! :-D

Buy this scope, stick it on your fave gun with some good rings, scope the bugger in and fire away for years and years and down the track you'll be telling others the same thing! Happy shootin' guys, and why don't you hurry up and get rid of them assault rifles, who needs them. All they seem to do is cause pain and death to innocent people. Ban that sh*t. Tell me a nice 'ol lever action can't be used for protection if required? Of course they can! All the best.
