Mike's Review of Opticron DBA Oasis 8x21mm Roof Prism Compact Binocular

Got these today. Usually I test new bins over several days under different conditions and against other comparable bins I own before reviewing. But I could find no reviews of these superb compacts anywhere so was compelled to post an unqualified 5 star review ASAP. To keep this review short, I will (try) not repeat any of the info from the product description but you can believe everything in the description and more. I compared these for about 90 minutes in late afternoon bright light against my Swarovski 8x20 and 8x25 models. In terms of overall optical performance and image quality the Opticron is 95% as good as either Swaro. The huge ocular lenses are a big plus and make eye placement foolproof. They are also recessed an extra bit even with the eyecups completely down which makes it easier to use without glasses but with eyecups completely down which is what I prefer to maximize FOV. Ergonomics are superb. This is slightly bigger and heavier than most 8x21 dual hinge but for me that makes them much easier to hold steady and gives the handling feel more of a mid size binocular. Unless you want or need a true "shirt pocket" (or small purse)size model, the small added size and weight are a big plus, not a minus. A tiny note, not a fault or criticism, there is a slight bit of play or slip when switching directions with the focus knob. This does not interfere with focusing function - which is first rate- but it is present. It could possibly be an intentional design feature to prevent accidental change in focus if the knob is bumped.

The included accessories are excellent and a big bonus compared to all other dual hinge compacts. All bins should include a rainguard but very few dual hinge models come with one. Kudos to Opticron for including their very serviceable compact rainguard and objective covers as well. Also included is a set of separate ocular covers if you prefer. The rainguard can be attached to the neck strap but not the other lens covers. The neck strap is easy to attach or detach if preferred and can be adjusted to a wide range of length preferences. It is made of thick stretchy comfortable rubber and has a single quick connect fitting which makes attaching and detaching a bit more convenient. For some preferences/uses the strap may be a bit bulky and or fiddly but the lugs allow using other straps as well. The included leather case is high quality and includes a belt loop but not its own carry strap. However the case design allows for using the bin strap to be deployed outside the case to carry if desired. There are no separate pockets but there is space to carry extra small items. This is also the only included case I know which allows the dual hinge design to be carried in the case in the position fully adjusted for your IP distance. Finally a large excellent cleaning cloth is included in its own folding plastic case. The size of the case prevents using it in a pocket, purse, or possibly backpack but the excellent heavy rubber armor and included lens covers allow carrying without the case if desired.

Highest recommendation, tremendous performance, especially at the price
