Definitely a necessity when working with small parts, screws, bolts, nuts, etc. Personally I enjoy the material it’s made out of, resistant to chemicals and moisture. Comes rolled up so tends to re-curl during use. I heated the mat in an oven to relax the rubber like material. Lays perfectly flat now
