The Peltor Tactical 6S Hearing Protector (97044) interested me because of its features: electronic hearing protection in a compact design.
Compactness is why I chose the 6S over the 7S. During initial use I was pleased to discover that the earmuffs are not bulky at all and were lighter than I thought. This added to overall comfort, especially with hours of use. Moreover, when the 6S is folded for storage it takes up very little space.
The installation of batteries into the earmuffs was not difficult at all. Access to the electronics requires a deliberate pull of the soft ear cuffs, which may worry some first-time users, but the construction is durable enough to easily handle this. I have never dropped the 6S, so I can not speak to its resilience towards greater abuse.
Attenuation of impulse noise is very quick and generally effective. The attenuation is on a per-ear basis, so if the source is closer to one ear, then that ear will have greater, independent attenuation compared to the opposite ear. The electronics are responsive and react almost immediately.
The Peltor 6S is equally effective when it comes to amplifying. I use the Peltor 6S at the shooting range and when they are not attenuating gunfire, the stereo microphones allow me to hear range directions and carry conversations with other shooters.
My only complaint is with headband adjustment. It is not as smooth as I prefer.
Overall, I recommend the Peltor Tactical 6S and hope you consider them.
Pros: Compactness and quality electronics
Cons: Headband adjustment is not as smooth as I prefer
