Mad Mike's Review of Peltor Tactical Sport Hearing Protection Ear Muffs

This is definitely a step up from the under $100 models from Peltor and other brands.

I absolutely hate the Howard Leight Impact Sport, even though it's considered a great beginners hearing protection for the money, in my experience, the seal to your head can be broken so easily by simply turning your head or clenching your teeth, The Howard Leights were worthless to me. Also the Howard Leight Impact Sport's ear pads would often stick to each other and be a hassle to unstuck, almost always pop off the muffs and thus I had to reinstall them every day at work before using them; else the hearing protection is diminished.

So now, you know why I bought the Peltor Tactical Sport.

While I'll admit I bought the separate Peltor Aviation Parts & Ac: Camelback Gel Sealing Rings HY80 HY80 for $46 (which I think is a must have); out of the box with the stock foam pads, the Peltors have a better seal and thus protecting your hearing.

The Audio quality is league better than the Howard Leight and almost sounds true to life and dose not ruin your ears if the wind picks up. Only complaint is that it seems like the ear cup with the buttons and battery compartment seems to be a bit dull sounding by a few clicks compared to the opposite cup and while there is a proper way to wear them, I don't distinguish them by right or left as some people might wear them differently and with one side having sharper amplification, that might be a consideration, though maybe my set is faulty by not having equal audio.

A worth while buy, you won't regret having them. The only reason I'm no longer recommending them, is that I've switched to using the MSA/Sordin Supreme Pro-X for shooting and tactical applications, which is almost a $300 set with upgrades like gel pads. Pricey I know, but well worth it for the quality and can fit under a helmet without paying for ComTac III's with communication wires that I don't need when just shooting at the range, hunting or at a training class, plus, even when buying a $600-$800 dollar headset, you still have to buy the gel pads separate. Just all depends on your needs, wants and budget.

I still use my Peltor Tactical Sport for work at a factory which has lots of whining generators and loud noises and when gardening using power tools.

P.S. Of course it's wise to double up with foam ear plugs or Sure fires when shooting pistols at indoor ranges or large caliber rifles even at outdoor ranges. In case any newbies are reading this, it's always good to have redundant safety measures.
Pros:
  • Better than most entry level headsets
  • Comfortable (with gel pads) for up to 7 hours without taking them off
Cons:
  • Could be slimmer for a "tactical" headset
  • Gel pads should come standard with all brands of hearing protection and all levels, it's a day and night difference
Best Used for:
  • shooting and light to medium power tool use
  • At it's price, buying multiple sets for out fitting a family or just having spares for shooting buddies or just throwing one in the car
