Legacy Reviewer's Review of Pieps Freeride
The description on this product is misleading and dangerous. I bought the Pieps Freeride a couple years ago. During an Avy 1 course this weekend, the instructor informed me that, although this beacon is made by a reputable company, it is a terrible one to rely on because having 1 antenna makes them by far the least accurate and most difficult beacons to use. According to Wikipedia, "In order to calculate the emitted dipole flux pattern, a digital transceiver must have at least two antennas, although most modern transceivers have three." What's worse, the beacon has an arrow on the screen, which becomes larger as you search, but the arrow is NOT directional - it only communicates signal strength. Super confusing/frustrating/dangerous (as I've experienced during practice searches) if you think following the arrow will help lead you to your buried buddy. The beacon is really only useful for being found, so would still work well for a dog or something else that won't be searching. Not worth the risk to save some money! Outdoor Gear Lab has a great review of this beacon, if you'd like more information.
Cons: Outdated technology, one antenna, difficult to use
