Glenn B's Review of Plano All Weather Tactical Rifle Cases

I have owned five Plano gun cases since September 2001. The first three were aluminum cases and the last two plastic (or polymer or whatever) cases. I like(d) the aluminum cases even though the larger of the three fell apart after about 14 years of good service. The others are still in decent condition and do the job. So when I needed a replacement case for the big one I got a Plano All Weather model 108191 (54" long). It is excellent but very heavy; although, being wheeled makes up for that. Recently I needed a gun case for airline travel that was not so big as to make the airline charge extra for oversized luggage. So, I ordered another Plano All Weather thinking it would be made just like the model 108191. The newest one was the smaller model 108361 at 40" long. It does not compare to the larger model and is quite the disappointment to me. First of all, when I open it, and this seems to be getting better with more use, the lid sort of snapped at one point in the swing on the hinge as if the hinge(s) are not aligned properly. Next, the construction is different from the All Weather larger to smaller cases. The outer edges of the smaller case are molded very differently and seemingly are much weaker than the larger case's edges, and there are sorts of pockets around the top edge that would hold water if the case was left outside and lying on its side for any reason. The main body also seems weaker and thinner than in the larger case. In fact, after traveling by air, the case was markedly crushed inward from the pressure change in the plane's cargo compartment back to the ground. Yes, there is a valve to equalize the pressure (otherwise you could not open the case without destroying it after the pressure change due to a flight) but it looked like a soda bottle with all the air sucked out of it after our flight. It seems very flimsy. If there had been cameras in there instead of guns, they would have been demolished. When I flew with the larger case years ago, on an airline that did not consider it oversized, this did not happen to the larger case. It is also very heavy for its smaller size and does not have wheels. Finally, the hinge pin that holds the handle in place has repeatedly worked its way partially out even though I keep pushing it back in place; I need to contact Plano about that and either have them fix it or replace the case as the case would be worthless if the handle falls off. In my opinion, it is not anywhere up to the standards that Plano used when manufacturing the larger case and I cannot recommend the Plano All Weather Gun Case Model 108361 as it has been a big disappointment for me.
Pros:
  • Size
  • pluckable foam inserts
Cons:
  • Seemingly flimsy case walls and edgesflimsy
  • No wheels and very heavy for its size
  • Hinge not aligned properly?
  • Hinge pin for handle keeps coming partially out
Best Used for:
  • I cannot recommend it for use
Would Recommend: No
