Mike's Review of Precision Armament M41 Severe-Duty Muzzle Brake

I installed this brake on a Bergara B-14 Ridge rifle chambered in 308 Winchester. The rifle also has a MDT HS3 chassis system and MDT V5 skeleton stock and and the glass is a Vortex Viper PST. In my honest opinion, a muzzle brake is not really necessary for a 308 in terms of recoil, but if shooting long range there is just enough recoil to make getting back on target in time and observing bullet splash difficult. I spent quite a while deciding on which brake to get, and this particular break seemed to be lacking in reviews, or really any thorough information for that matter. I know I wanted a brake that would reduce recoil enough to see impacts, yet also be somewhat friendly to the shooter and also neighbors on other benches at the range. That alone removed the M4-72 Severe Duty from consideration. The M41 is more of a radial style brake than a directional brake. When I initially installed this on my B-14, my concern about the stock barrel being a #5 contour came true. The stock barrel is .680 diameter at the shoulder of the threads and the diameter of the M41 is .925 at the base. I used marking ink on the base of the brake and threaded it on to the B-14. Sure enough, there was not enough bearing surface at the shoulder of the barrel for my liking. No problem though. I bought a 5/8" crush washer, put it on the barrel and threaded the brake back on. Worked like a charm! There was plenty of bearing surface to make contact with the brake and barrel shoulder and also made tightening the break for proper tension much easier. I've shot 150 rounds so far and the brake has not even budged, no need for thread locker. In shooting the rifle off a bench with 168 grain Bergers on top a near max load of Varget, I would say the recoil has been reduced to that of around a 22-250. Keep in mind this isn't a directional brake and it isn't going to completely mitigate recoil. But the recoil is reduced enough to watch bullet impacts as close as 400 yards very easily. I was ringing steel from 400 up to 1000 yards with ease on a fairly windy day and had no trouble seeing a close miss and adjusting accordingly to make contact on the follow up shot. Shooters at the other benches never complained about overbearing noise or feeling the blast. As a matter of fact there was quite some interest at the range regarding the M41, as most shooters at my range have Shrewd brakes on their custom rifles. Some of the older benchresters didn't care for the chunky hunk of metal on my rifle's muzzle, and I agree it is not as pretty as a Shrewd turned down to match the contour of your barrel, but it does what it's intended job is and it does it very well in my opinion. Nothing against Shrewd brakes, as I have one on my custom .284 Winchester bench gun, but the M41 just plain beats it hands down in my opinion.
Pros:
  • reduced recoil significantly, shooter and neighbor friendly, fit and finish are superb, doesn't collect carbon deposits as easily as other brakes I've used, on a tactical rifle the brake definitely adds to the visual wow factor.
Cons:
  • it is very large and heavy, the radial style is not good for shooting in a dusty environment, a crush washer will be needed for shoulders less than .750 in my opinion.
Best Used for:
  • Tactical long range shooting, bench shooting, hunting in an open field or right of way with electronic hearing protection.
