phred's Review of Primary Arms 6x Magnifier Gen II

I've always had good luck with Primary Arms Optics. They have a 6x15 tactical scope at about $300 and change that you would to spend well over a 1000 to beat (they have that scope as well if you want it). That said, I was disappointed in the 6x, but that's not the scope just an error in judgement on my part. The 6x is clear enough although it could use more eye relief. The problem is 6 power is to much magification unless you brace yourself or the gun. Every slight motion at this power will move the red dot from one side of an eight inch steel at fifty yards. 50% was my hit rate with the scope and 100% with the scope swunge aside. I recently replaced the six power with their 3x extended eye relief, problem fixed. The 3x is clear and the eye relief is the best I've seen on anyones magnifier. It easily centers and holds its setting well. Just too much magnification on the 6x for anything less than 300 yards wthout a stabilized mount. Now about the mount. I'd heard both good and bad things about this mount. With the 3x extended eye relief scope mounted, it works fine with my EOtech 512 although your loss about the top 1/4 of the scope field it will still center the reticle and puts you on target. It's useless with my EOtech EXPS3-2, the central part of the scope is block by the EOtechs body. The reason is the detent pins that lock the mount in position do not let the scope rest against the lower part of the mount, making it about 3/8 inch to high. I'm pleased with the 3x, not so pleased with the mount and don't waste your money on the 6x, instead buy a 1x6 power scope, it's covers from close to much farther than the 6x.
Pros:
  • Clear optics
Cons:
  • too much magnification for reseasonable use.
