Kia's Review of ProMag Archangel Mauser K98 Precision Stock w/5-Round Follower 10-Round Magazine

I have had an FN Herstal Mauser in 30-06 for years. I inherited it from my Grandfather and it was the first large caliber rifle I ever fired at age 9.
I love the 30-06 round. It is perfectly capable of long distance shots with ammunition that has been around since the turn of the last century. However, when this rifle was first imported to the US it had been sporterized, that is to say that the original military stock was replaced by a hunting stock and as a result it lost any value as a collector piece. My Grandfather used this gun to hunt deer back in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It was a "deerslayer" from its first use hunting. The 30-06 round is perfect for deer and other large game on the American continent. It will take deer, elk and even bear down, when a properly placed round contacts the game animal.
After my time in the military I didn't own any large caliber rifles for sometime. I do own an AR-15, but the 5.56 mm round is not intended to take large game, unless you swap out the upper and use a .30 caliber round in place of the 5.56 mm.
The primary reason that I bought the AA98 stock was to update the FN and turn it into a long distance shooting rifle. I don't hunt any more because I have spilled enough blood and now carry a concealed handgun and have a fairly robust collection of firearms for target shooting and home defense. Having been trained as a sniper in the military I enjoy the challenge and excitement I get from making long shots with a rifle. At our home, a 60 acre farm, I have a shooting range which my wife and I use quite a bit. I found that I can extend the distance to our range to about 800 meters by shooting across one of our pastures and once I had measured it out I got pretty excited that I could shoot long distance and the only "expense" involved was just mowing our pasture to make a shooting lane to our shooting range. That did it for me and I then got involved in trying to find a rifle capable of shooting that distance accurately and found that the costs involved exceeded what my wife allotted me for the purchase of a rifle to take on that task. Then I remembered the FN Herstal that was my legacy and began to make inquiries into what it would take to fit the rifle with a modern stock with adjustable cheek riser and butt plate. The prices for such a stock were all over the board and I was rather disappointed that I couldn't find one that fit the bill as far as performance and costs until I found the Archangel AA98.
I had purchased an Archangel stock for my Ruger 10-22 that gave it the appearance and usability of the M-4 configuration. I bought that stock and have found it to be flawless for my 10-22. After looking around and finding the AA98 stock for my FN Mauser I was thrilled to say the least. Archangel's stocks are exactly what they claim to be and I have been impressed with their products since I got the M-4 stock for my 10-22.
I had a couple of hiccups before I finally ordered the AA98 stock but, once I received it and found that I had absolutely no trouble fitting my FN into the stock I have been incredibly happy with the stock. I found that with the iron sights only I was able to double the distance of shooting the rifle, accurately, from 100 meters to 200 meters in a short half hour of shooting.
I'm now on to having the rifle drilled and tapped for adding a decent scope for distance shooting the rifle.
The stock has been perfect for me. Being able to double the range to accurately shoot the rifle with the iron sights was quite a surprise to me but, that's what can happen when you add the capability of adjusting the cheek and the length of the stock with a few simple twists of the knobs on the stock. I anticipate similar results after I add a decent scope on the rifle and look forward to many hours of fun shooting for distance and have even taken on the task of building a bench for it using my Grandfather's design for his shooting bench, with a few modern conveniences added.
The stock gives the rifle a very modern look and as a result of putting the FN Mauser action into the new stock has gotten my wife (who shoots right along side me) interested in long distance shooting as well. The addition of having a 10 round magazine to the rifle was quite a pleasant surprise as well, since I was only able to reload after every shot with the rifle previously.
To sum up, the Archangel AA98 stock has been everything I had hoped for and much more. The price of such a well designed stock is simply superb and was a complete shock to me in terms of usability and quality. The stock and its 10 round magazine are top notch and I would urge everyone who has an old Mauser hanging around to grab one of these stocks and enjoy the fun that comes with it when shooting the great stock that Archangel has designed. Shoot safe and have a great time with your "new" old rifle!
