Varmit's Review of Pulsar Thermion 2 XQ38 2.5-10x Thermal Rifle Scope

Shortly after receipt the internal battery quit charging. Used it with external battery for awile. The batteries did did not hold a charge anywhere near as long as advertised. After several days of use, the image split. One half was frozen on a previous image and the other was showing the correct image but somewhat inferior. After about 3 days of dialog with the tech, I was advised to send it in for repair. My FedeX tracking revealed Pulsar received it on the 9th. After a week I sent emails asking when it might repaired. I was advised it takes 10 days to 2 weeks to get a unit fixed and mine was in process. A couple more days and I called. I got a recording which stated we are unable to respond. We will return your call. Late the next day I called again and got the same message. Meanwhile I got an email from Pulsar asking how the unit was performing. I stated my displeasure with the amount of time it was taking for repair. The next business day I got a phone call from the tech I corresponded with in the beginning. At that point in the routine, my wife got tired of my grumping about how long it was taking. Unknown to me my wife went to Pilsar's facebook page and messaged them. She stated how disappointed we were with the speed of service. They messaged back to say they just received the scope yesterday which at this point it was the 21st. The Pulsar representative said even though they received the scope on the 9th they just started working on it. Finally we got a good idea of progress. My wife messaged them that they must have many units being sent back for repair. The responding rep said that the repair people not only did repairs they do quality checks on the optics. It appears that if you have to send a scope in for repair you are going to be waiting awhile. I had a brand of lower price for 3 years. I harvested around 30 coyotes with it. Like nonthermal scopes it seems you get what you pay in thermal as well. Aside from all of that, I was extremely surprised and pleased with the image quality of the XQ38. The 38 was far superior to my lessser priced thermal. If you are fortunate enough to get a unit that is not defective I would highly recommend buying one. I put off spending over $3000 because of the high price tag. My humble opinion is that if Pulsar can't fix a unit quick send a new one.
Pros:
  • Excellent Image Quality
Cons:
  • The time it takes to get a defective scope repaired.
Best Used for:
  • Stealth in the darkeness

About Varmit from OH, United States

I am a 75 year old retired farmer. I have been shooting ground hogs on my family's Ohio farms since age 12. My cousin and I made our first prairie dog shooting trip to Wyoming in 1976. We have not missed too many yearly trips since. Coyotes came to west central Ohio in the 1970s. For the last 20 plus years we have used road kill deer for coyote bait in the winter months. 4 years ago I bought my first thermal scope. Night hunting has been amazing. I had no idea how many coyotes there were in our neighborhood.
