bj's Review of Pulsar Digisight Ultra N455 Digital Night Vision Rifle Scope

I knew the N455 was not a Gen 4/5 scope. Neither was it the most expensive. Put $$ next to what is visible, and this Pulsar is more than ok. I use it at my ranch to identify objects the thermal FLIR II handheld picks up and my low end, rifle mounted ATN thermal can not. Example, a bright spot with legs at 120m. Hand held, the N455 sees the color pattern of my sheep dogs. Good that I did not try a shot with a bright torch and conventional scope. I have enough confidence now to mount the Pulsar on a rifle. We will see. It will take some getting used to with a starting power of 4.5. I think 1.5 would have been better. Range w/o the extra IR is ~ = as with, except with the IR there is a whole lot more resolution out to about 100m. With the IR easy to see the mane on horses and brisket on my cows. I can distinguish fence and low trees out to about 400 m with a quarter moon. Daylight is good, about that of an older B&W TV show <300bpi. Of course, a few years down the road, I will want that Gen 4.
Pros:
  • gets the job done, price, not too many buttons to distract at that critical moment, good battery life
Cons:
  • big, still have pesky buttons, not free
Best Used for:
  • identification in low light to dark w/o thermal tools
