Shaun Horne's Review of Radian Weapons Talon Ambidextrous Safety Selector 2-Lever KIT

I have had great experience with my Radian accessories for the AR platform but I have to admit this is the first that has left me feeling a bit in the middle. I really wanted the short throw 45* capability of this ambi safety lever but realized while installing it at the same time as upgrading from a mil-spec trigger to a Geissele SSA trigger, that the 45* short throw position would not fully release from safety of the trigger (Not able to fire). Despite that, I installed it in configuration for a typical 90* configuration, still excited about it being ambi, which could still make returning to safe position easier and faster for me. What I came to realize though, is the safety lever travel was not smooth, and almost felt lumpy, requiring much more input force and follow through my my thumb when moving from Safe to Fire quickly - especially compared to the smooth, snappy, and easy click of a metal mil-spec safety lever.

Not wanting to give up, I tried working it a lot to see if it would wear in with no luck (and yes it was lubed as instructed when installed). Finally I removed the detent and spring to compare with the mil-spec safety detent and spring. After swapping in the mil-spec spring and detent to work with the Radian Ambi Safety lever, it movement got easier and more acceptable. I am still going to have to work with it for a while in training drills to see if it's really worth it for me.

Here's where the Yes or no recommendation comes in. If you're modifying/building a rifle/pistol with all the bells and whistles because it's your passion, I think this is a neat and good looking piece of equipment. If you're modifying/building for the purpose of functionality and planning on putting a lot of hard use and training into the firearm/equipment on it, this may not be the right safety lever. I'm sure it's possible the one I received could be slightly out of Radian's specs for quality, causing it to be a bit stick and harsh, but it is hard to get around the stark difference in how the lever can be quickly snapped from safe to fire when driving the firearm to your point of aim and doing multiple other things at the same time. This really was an upgrade to make returning to safe easier for me, because in training and practical application, there should be a lot of safety manipulation. That being said, not having to worry about the lever making it all the way from safe to fire when my thumb strikes it and I am presenting and doing X,Y,& Z other things I don't need to get into, is more important than being able to safety again more conveniently than a typical long thumb reach. For those wanting the most efficiency while maintaining reliability for firearms used in duty, I would not recommend this particular product from Radian, despite many other great items they offer. For firearms not utilized in the line of duty for work, I think it is still a nice add on/modification for personal preference and sport/pleasure based use of firearms.
Pros:
  • Ambidexterous
Cons:
  • Not as Smooth at mil-spec lever
  • May not work in the 45* setting for aftermarket triggers
Best Used for:
  • Looks and Pleasure shooting
Would Recommend: No
