I purchased a bag of the Q-tip size w/ 3" handle awhile back and use them for just about everything. The bamboo handles are strong and flexible and many times after use I've clipped off the swab and used the handles for a scratch free pick or punch. I even used them as slave pins installing an AR trigger.
I've since bought a bag of the .38 size with long handle for cleaning pistols and I'm about to buy a 2nd bag of the .30 cal size, which comes with a plastic jag for your cleaning rod. These are alot easier than patches. The one & only downside is the swabs are single use.
