lazerbeam's Review of RCBS M1000 Mechanical Scales

The weight and length of the makes for a an extremely stable beam-style scale. Even when the powder cup is swaying the beam is rock steady. The three sliding weight adjustments were a little awkward to use as I've been using an older RCBS M505 (?) that has only 2 weight adjustments. While the M1000 is a very stable scale, it has what I consider two flaws that seriously detract from its usefulness. One is the scale's color choice of black with with letters (actually more like silver color), and (2) the useless 3 pointer weight indicator. First let me explain the three pointer issue. There are there pointers, stacked on top op each other. When the bar line is aligned on the bottom pointer one is approximately 1 gr below the desired weight. The middle pointer indicates one is at the desired weight and the uppper pointer is approximately 1 gr over the desired weight. Sounds good on paper but unlike older RCBS scales where the pointer line and the beam bar pointer were on the same plane, the beam bar sets behind the 3 pointer gizmo, making parallax focusing a real issue depending if you are looking down at the pointers. I use a webcam set on a block of wood at the same height as and directly facing the pointers. I connect the webcam to a notebook computer and can see the actual weight accurately. The other complaint is the "white" on black numbering. It is harder to see than the old white background with black letters used on older model RCBS scale. For what its worth, the new RCBS M500 uses the same 3 pointer system. What a shame. Finally, the scale comes with a clear plastic cover that encapsulates the entire top of the scale. Unfortunatly, one has to disassemble the scale to make it fit. RCBS would have been better off scrapping it and lowering the price of these scale.
Pros:
  • Highly stable beam
Cons:
  • Useless pointer system
  • Poor choice of scale numbering colors
  • Cumberson scale protection cover
