Randy's Review of Redfield Rampage 20-60x60mm Spotting Scope Kit
Just received today. Haven't had a chance to try it out at the shooting range, but did some testing in the yard at known distances.
I poked some .17 and .22 caliber holes in a target to test, some in the black part of the target, some in the white and one in the red bullseye. For all practical purposes, if I could see them at all I could see them in any of those areas.
I started about 5 pm, it gets dark between 7:30 and 8 pm right now, so it was toward, but not really dusk.
I could see .17 caliber holes at 70 yards even at 40x. I could make them out if I stared a little hard at 20x, I could see them easily at 60x.
I could see .17 caliber at 100 yds easily enough at 60x, I didn't really record results at lesser powers.
I could not get a solid rest at 120 yards, so tried just standing and holding the scope. You can imagine at 60x, this is nearly impossible. Still, I could see .22 caliber holes when the view went across the target, I'm not sure I ever made out any .17 caliber holes. I believe if I'd had it on a table or bench there's a decent chance I could have seen them. 200 yards would probably be stretch, but I haven't tried it.
I see why some people throw away the tripod and buy better, it is plastic. However, it is pretty stable for just setting on a bench, and the adjustments are smooth enough that you aren't continually "overshooting" your adjustment. For my purposes, it's good enough and I don't plan to replace it. I like that you can mount it on a standard tripod, so you have nearly unlimited options if that's what you want to do.
All I really need is to be able to see .17 caliber holes at 100 yards, and she will do that so I'm happy. I found a coupon for $15 off (google "optics planet coupons") so only paid $171. I think to get anything significantly better for my needs is unnecessary, and would probably cost me a few hundred more.
