Judas1's Review of Rothco MA-1 Flight Jacket - Men's

Honestly I cannot find a single positive thing to write about this jacket. I owned a generic one back in 2000 that I got from a military surplus store for a very cheap price, and I thought perhaps this Rothco product would be similar but boy was I wrong! Let me begin with the fitment. I ordered a Medium size as I am 6ft 2" and 73kg with a tiny waist, and this thing is like wearing a hot air balloon! Literally. It is like it was tailored to fit Santa Claus! I don't have a gut or "dad bod" as I look after myself and watch what I eat, but I was not expecting this! Even the sleeves look like they are inflated with air they are so puffy! Onto the materials...The outer shell nylon is very stiff and very crinkly, making quite a scrunchy sound which is very strange. Maybe it is a coating on the nylon? I can't find any information from Rothco pertaining to this, but regardless it is a very cheap grade (denier?) of nylon used and the lining is even worse. It is like tissue paper, and very see through. Not at all how I remember my older jacket which had a very thick and substantial liner and outer shell. The seams and stitching incorporates a light weight thread and not a heavier gauge one would expect on an "active" use jacket. I don't expect the seams to hold through very much at all before tearing or fraying. The "leather" pull tabs (yes they are described as leather by Rothco), are nothing of the sort. They are a wafer thin Vinyl/pvc with a cloth backing..Absolute cheap garbage. The zippers are brass colored zinc alloy and not actual brass at all, the left arm zip pocket is weirdly located on the front bicep area of the arm, not where it should be on the side of the arm, which just makes no sense whatsoever? The knitted cuffs, waistband and collar are poorly executed and single seam stitched to the jacket fabric, so there is no strengthening where it is most critical. The knitted fabric is thin and cheap and will likely pill and lint in no time, and will fray very quickly. The dome closures on all pockets feature no reinforcement whatsoever so likely will rip out with mild use. The interior pocket lining is made of fabric so flimsy it might as well be toilet paper. This jacket is just so horrible! Please, please don't be fooled by the sellers claims and the rare few "positive" reviews that I am sure must be generated by the manufacturer. These jackets are garbage and thats where they belong. They are nothing on what they used to be. Even at $40 odd dollars, they are a rip off! These are now cranked out by the millions in a Chinese factory with little to no quality control and guidelines to make something as cheaply as possible while still retaining the "look" of a traditional MA-1 jacket. Aesthetically they do the job, but thats where the similarities end. Save your money and buy an Alpha or better still a Schott MA-1. This jacket will not make you happy. Trust me.
