Beans's Review of Safariland Model RGR-UBL Drop Leg Holster
I wanted to like it but it’s the sweat pants of the pro leg strap world. If you want tactical comfort, this is a good start. I was sold on the idea of an articulating leg strap mounting system to aide in mobility. It does that just fine.
The strap is big-thick doubled up on my’ leg and fragile. You don’t want to catch the fully elastic strap on anything. It already suffers every readjustment with it’s own hook & loop wrap. I replaced the velcro with belt keepers. The strap is actually ok. It has silicone strips on the inside keeping it pasted to itself where there’s no keeper. I’m sure it was meant for the strap to not ride up or down on the pant material (the strap is definitely not for use with TFBtv style short shorts).
On the big buckle. It’s big in all directions and flat. Where the strap meets the male-end buckle, it sticks out and forward 5/8 of an inch. That does help keep friction and the direction shift starts a natural curve around the thigh.
On drawing it works great if I’m standing upright with little to no bend in my hips & knee. I’m short and narrow so, I blame me. Like shopping for a pair of board shorts, I have to watch the seam. Too low is no good…. I’ve reattached the leg swivel to a 1.75” mid ride CUBL. I used the short length screw mount to take more off the drop. Still long and it still flexes like a modern rollercoaster. Again, fine if not seated.
It’s the thin webbing on a single swivel screw at the bottom of the CUBL. 2 swivels if you count the leg strap QD and then more thin webbing holding the leg strap with sewn in velcro.
The two swivels seem a bit much but there is zero pinch on the strap. The complete assembly is perfectly comfortable. It’s just not rigid and supportive where “I” need.
Drawing from a crouch or seated was’ a challenge at first. The holster flexes the swivel QD and the webbing attachment points. It can flair out up to 1-1/2” from my hip. Mitigable with a simple lean over the belt. Using my body to keep downward pressure on the belt top/ holster worked out fine.
Switching to the shorter drop adjustment hole worked ok. It made a passthrough for another strap. A top strap will probably make the bottom strap useless and I’m trying to limit all additional hansolo strap shenanigans.
And so it goes. I’m replacing almost all of it.
I’m picking up a Forge Concepts grommeted leg strap. Almost ordered the Tegris composite plated BFT CHLK strap at 2/3rd the cost. I went for the Forge Concepts with the cobra buckle because Fu(£ it. I’m running the FC strap with flanged bushings for a wiggle free -fully tightened and smooth pivot. Outside mount to make room for a padded vent. Will use the mount as a low side spacer (grommet and bushings at approx. 1/4”. Removing thick hollow black spacer for a 1/8” or less spacer.
Awesome product. Needs improvement. I’m stealing the 2 -flanged bushings and already repurposed the “fray up your new strap” velcro. It’s now my CUBL mount stabilizer.
Thanks, that’s about all for now.
