Mingo's Review of SIG SAUER Whiskey5 10x42mm Rifle Scope 30mm Tube, Second Focal Plane

I recently purchased this BDX product and was hoping to get good use out of it. Well, it didn't work out that way. As I was getting myself familiar with connecting the range finder and the scope (after downloading the app), I was bombarded with a message to upgrade the rangefinder, just kept coming back even though I would request a postponement by cancelling the request. In the process, I guess the rangefinder went along and started upgrading to a new firmware because after a few minutes I couldn't get it to connect or respond. I also noticed my BDX app was not working either. This is where I made a mistake (thinking about it) and restarted the BDX app on the phone. That's when all went wrong. The app came back but the range finder was dead, completely dead. I could not get it to turn on, even removing the battery, holding the power button or letting it sit overnight without the battery.
I looked up some troubleshooting on line, thinking someone out there would have encountered a similar problem and that i might find a solution but I never did. It seems the system has not been out on the market that long so I suppose I could find a solution. I then called SIG and asked for advice. They told me they had not encountered such a problem but that the rangefinder must have been uploading the new firmware when it disconnected from the app and it ruined the software in the unit. So here is my advice if you are considering this product; ALWAYS let the system upgrade to whatever software it needs no matter what you are doing and leave you tasks for a later time (to prevent this system from failure. I have made a lot of firmware updates on cameras, tablets, cell phones, and other devices and have not had such an issue. I guess i just messed this up by trying to cancel the upgrading at that moment in time. Anyway, I sent the unit back for repair and the SIG support was very helpful but it sure urks me to have to do all of this trouble because of the simple upgrade that went bonkers. So here I am waiting on a rangefinder that I have not been able to use, the scope's BDX is useless and it functions like a regular scope. It seems to me that SIG should go back to the software drawing board and rewrite the firmware loading method so other people don't encounter this problem. At this point i would caution others that you may have issues as well, so I am not recommending this product. I'm going back to the Leupold CDS system and sell off this scope system as soon as I get the rangefinder returned. I also noticed the scope has a real thick reticle and makes it hard to see the target center when sighting in at 100 yards. Buyer beware.
