B-rock's Review of SIG SAUER Grip Upgrade Kit, P220, E2

The stock grips on the 220 were a bit bulky for me and required me to shift my hand in order to activate the mag release. I was looking for some grips that were slightly thinner but retained the same distance to the trigger and the E2 series fit the bill. I have these on my newer Sig pistols and I like the grip material and the feel. My 220 may be some kind of hybrid, maybe a between model type of configuration, it has the standard lower rail like the newer Sigs, it's labeled "made in Germany" but it has a newer style short plastic piece for the hammer spring and the grips are the old old style split grips. So, I got the package and installed all the little pieces parts and when I went to put the grip on, I noted the differences between the retro kits and the original E2 series grips. This kit has little studs that stick out of the grip and go in the grips screw holes as apposed to the factory E2 models that have studs on the handle of the pistol and the grips has divots the studs fit into...makes since but I just didn't think about it before I saw them. All in all, everything was smooth up to this point, fully installed and everything working. I noticed the grip removal tool was somewhat thinner than the others I have...this also makes since because this is a single stack mag and the other E2's I have are double stack mags. Just to try things out, I tried to use the tool to remove the grips and it didn't work. Not like it's a pain to use, which they usually are, but this one just didn't work, at all.
The tool doesn't spread the grip wide enough to remove the grip. If you finagle it around and pop one side loose and hold it while you sort of wedge the tool against the other side, they will eventually pop loose. A quick fix that I fashioned was to wrap the tool in a few layers of electrical tape to increase it's width when installed and it works like the factory E2 setup on my other Sig's.
I could only reason that maybe they made the studs a bit longer on the grips because they were made from plastic and will eventually wear down with repeated installation/removal; and after they lengthened the studs, they did not adjust the factory removal tool to accommodate the additional width required to remove the grips. Who knows, but this removal tool is too skinny and the double stack tool is too fat, so you can use the quick fix that I used or make your own.
