Matt Johnson's Review of Snapsafe, A Hornady Company Premium Vault Door

The Snap Safe Vault Door is an excellent addition for anyone thinking of adding security to an existing home. The vault door arrived by freight carrier to my home within 2 weeks of ordering. It was securely packaged with an outer cardboard box padded with Styrofoam. An inner cardboard box contained an aluminum shipping frame packed with more Styrofoam. The door arrived on a wooden pallet and weighed 388lbs. Without packaging the door weighs in around 300lbs.

The door arrived prehung on a tubular steel frame. Most of the seams are spot welded to save cost and weight, though this will not compromise security as the hinges are completely welded. The vault door and frame install like any other prehung door, though you are not able to remove the door from the frame. Once in place, the frame is bolted in place to the studs with 10 13mm lag bolts on the sides. The installation kit includes a fairly decent ratchet, deep well, thin wall socket (which you will definitely need due to the diameter of the installation holes), plastic shims, 2 emergency keys, lag bolts, washers, and instructions for safe installation and lock operation. The door can be installed with one person though it will be a struggle especially if the door frame is far from being square. The installation process was a breeze, just like any other door once it is put in place.

Overall, the construction of the safe appears to be solid with fireproofing. While not as secure as a true vault door, it fills the niche between secure and affordable. One issue I did have is the lack of a door gasket. If the door is closed too hard it will bounce back with a loud crack. The door also allows air to flow through the opening on the sides.
