Wayne DeWitt's Review of Snapsafe, A Hornady Company Lock Box, 2 Units Keyed Alike

I avoid reviews like the plague...but this needs to be said.
I bought the "LARGE" and "XXL" models. The "LARGE" BARELY holds a 3" Kahr and an extra mag. The "XXL" holds a 5" 1911 and several mags...it's advertised as holding "3 compact pistols". If 2 of them are Seecamps, or derringers that might be true. It will NOT hold more than 2 3" Kahrs...I tried.

The foam inside the boxes is flat SOFT open-cell foam .375" thick. 2 layers on top and 2 layers on the bottom. FLAT...NOT convoluted. That's for BOTH models. See the problem? The XXL box is .8" DEEPER than the LARGE box...and it has the same thickness of foam in it.

1.875 - (2*.065) = 1.745 internal height.
2.640 - (2*.065) = 2.510 internal height.

The XXL has .765 MORE internal height than the LARGE box. The SOFT foam totals 1.5". So the LARGE box has a gap of .245" between the foam, but the XXL box has a >1" gap...between the layers of SOFT highly compressible NON-CONVOLUTED foam. The XXL will actually completely self-close with a 1911 inside. Today I used the XXL with my 1911. And I drove 75 miles listening to my pistol bang around inside the box with every turn that I made and every bump in the road. Guess I'll have to add a bunch of cardboard to the XXL box. Or use a coffee can instead.

Notice also that they changed the locks and the locking mechanism from earlier models...really went cheap with these. The cable is still too wimpy.

Caveat emptor.
Pros:
  • It's made of metal
Cons:
  • Poor design and execution
Best Used for:
  • A decoy...put a brick in it to annoy thieves.
