ConcernedParent's Review of Stack-On Full Length In Wall Shotgun Steel Cabinet

I did not expect this wall cabinet to be as secure as a gun safe so I'm not complaining about its strength (I think a person with a crow bar could rip it open quickly). My intent for buying it was to store a couple of long guns that could quickly be accessed, while still keeping curious kids away. This product meets my needs(an AR and a tactical shotgun fit easily but slings are a pain to stuff in). I was able to easily install it by myself in an upstairs closet. Installation note: my wall stud finder did not locate a PVC vent pipe running between the two 2X4 studs - I found this out after I started cutting the sheetrock. Luckily my first cut was horizontal and not vertical, as I found the pipe quicker and now have only a small cut in the sheetrock to patch. Also, I recommend using a hand saw for sheetrock as I was able to quickly feel when the blade hit the PVC pipe. One negative is the packaging used by Stack-On to ship the wall cabinet. They use some light foam around the cabinet inside a cardboard box, however it provides very little protection for the mounting flange corners. Mine arrived with one corner bent and about a 1/4" by 3/8" piece of paint chipped off the corner. I used an adjustable wrench to bend the corner back to near its original position. Since I installed it in a closet I will use it as is. Once installed the door/lock functioned fine. Opening was a bit noisy so I wrapped the ends of the locking bars with some electrical tape and greased the linkage pivot points - that helped a little to quieten door entry.
