MonsterMash's Review of Streamlight Protac Rail Mount HL-X Laser

I’ve read a few of the reviews here that mention the weight being a con of this item. A couple gave low reviews because of this and the others still have 5 stars. For me, this is the first firearm light accessory I’ve ever bought, and I personally never once thought of it as being too heavy. A little bulky, yeah perhaps for some. But it honestly works great for me. I attached it to a AR-9 with a 3” barrel, so a very compact firearm. I mounted on a 45 degree offset GGG mount from the top pictanny rail, so the light sits between 1-2PM. The end of the light meets the end of the barrel, sits high enough to not interfere with ejecting, and perfectly clears the front irons by a couple millimeters. So long sorry short, despite its size it’s works perfect on my compact build. The gun is light enough already that the extra weight of the light has no effect on me. This light has two brightness levels, with the lower one being very bright and the highest one blinding! I tested on myself with a mirror (NOT recommended), and saw dots in my vision for 15 minutes afterwards. The bright light would definitely help against a potential threat, and coupled with the wonderful strobe feature could be quite effective. Laser is dim with bright, but good with the low light setting; and very good on its own. It’s easily adjusted with the supplied Allen key. A slight 1/4 turn left of the battery cover allows for laser-only use with the pressure pad. Just everything about this light/laser is solid/quality. It’s all metal, sturdy as all heck, the thumb screw for mounting is solid and easy to mount, USB charging battery with good charge life, will light up a whole backyard, and an optional pressure pad attached to a different light cap. I would buy one again if I need one on a different firearm.
Pros:
  • Price
  • Quality construction
  • very bright
  • Built in laser
  • Sturdy Mounting
Cons:
  • maybe a bit on the heavier side but not by much.
Best Used for:
  • Builds not already too heavy with other accessories.
