BDR's Review of Streamlight Protac Rail Mount HL-X Laser
I needed a rifle light for one of my AR builds, which has an Adam’s Arms standard picatinny gas block, piston carbine with a Midwestindustries drop-in quad-railI, UTG Super Slim Fixed Low Profile Front Sight, UTG fixed rear sight. (I own one Streamlight ProTac rail-mount HLX 1000 without laser and have it mounted on a cloud defensive CORv2 rail with Holosun Red dot. It’s sleek, fairly light and works great with the pressure switch in the LCS.) I picked up this new laser / light HLX to compare the two and see if it’s functionality is worth the extra 3.9 once weight and 0.80 inch length difference. For my set up, it’s doable, the weight is noticeable but manageable, no issue with the length, in fact the further towards the muzzle, the less shadowing occurs. As far as functionality, I have it mounted with a magpul rail light mount using the v-block and rings since the HLX integrated rail mount interfered with my front iron sight. Also using Clouddefensive LCS for the the pressure switch. One positive thing about using this light with the pressure switch is the ability to activate only the laser if desired to. The way to do this is to tighten the cap all the way, then back out about less of a 1/4 turn to the left. This will deactivate the light function and only actuate the laser. When I want the light and laser to turn on, I simply turn the cap back a 1/4
turn all the way to the right. This was the main selling point for me and I understand that a lot of people are not aware of this and have passed this light over just because this is not mentioned anywhere on the product description. If I could post pictures I would, but what I can say is that I am satisfied with the overall usage and functionality of this light. This is an economical way of integrating a laser to your rifle if you require one.
