Steve's Review of Streamlight Waypoint Rechargeable Flashlight 120V

First of all yes this light is bright. It's lightweight, durable and has a well balanced feel in the hand. You won't get tired using this for any length of time. I've only had it a couple of weeks and haven't had the chance yet to even run the battery down or use it on the water after dark, which was my primary purpose for the purchase. There are several different Waypoint spotlights on the market and with each a different set of functions and specifications, many of the reviews and adds I've read have these all mixed up making it difficult to know what function goes with what light. For example, this light, the rechargeable Lithium Ion LED Waypoint model 44911 does not have the strobe feature! Most of the write ups I've read, including the one here at opticsplanet incorrectly show this as an included function of this model. What it does have though is three levels of illumination, low,. medium and high. The low setting is actually a lot more useful that I originally thought it would be. It's light output is more like a small handheld LED flashlight. So it doesn't blind you if used in close quarters around the room, boat or tent. Actually, I find myself using this setting most of the time and of course when indoors. The high and medium settings are strictly for the outdoors and there is not a huge difference between them when shining the light up close but more noticeable on distant objects. Don't get me wrong though, high is indeed blindingly bright! Another little item that isn't mentioned in any of the reviews or manufactures write ups is that the maximum lumen output is only accurate for maybe 10 to 15 min's - at least according to the illumination output chart included on the box. The battery will last on high a good long time likely as stated but the actual light output drops on significantly, again according to the chart on the box, down to around 100 lumens after 3 hours. So technically yes, the battery will last for 3 hours on high but the light output will drop accordingly as time passes. They don't tell you that little spec. Although not shown I suspect the other settings to be the same. All that being said, the light is very bright, well made, useful and I haven't for a moment regretted my purchase. OpticsPlanet shipping and processing time was fast and I received the product on time and as promised. Their price was very competitive. I received all the appropriate emails and confirmations. Couldn't really ask for more.
For those (like me) that are replacing a Brinkmann Max Million 2 Million candlepower rechargeable spotlight and had the Lead Acid battery fail on them this is a very good replacement spotlight. The two are very close in their light output. The Brinkmann's light is yellowish due to the bulb compared to the blueish white LED in the Streamlight. The two are different but there isn't a clear winner as far as which is brighter. The Streamlight has a very distinct round center beam (with good throw to the sides) whereas the Brinkmann has a much larger center giving it a tad more (wider) coverage area. Both have very good surround lighting although the Streamlight has the ability to switch to medium, which does reduce the surrounding light. It's every bit as bright as the Brinkmann though and much lighter. Winner - Streamlight due mainly to it's versatility and light weight.
