Tim's Review of TRYBE Optics Enhancer Scope Magnification Doubler w/ Tube Mount

I mounted this on a 30mm 1-6X FFP LPVO, on a 16" 5.56mm rifle. After getting this zeroed it works, but zeroing was frustrating.
First the negatives...I have never spent so many rounds trying to zero an optic. First, you have to loosen the set screw and then figure out which way to adjust the turrets (hint...elevation: CW moves POI down, CCW moves POI up) (windage: CW moves POI left, CCW moves POI right). The increments marked on the turrets don't seem to have any specific interval either (I think the manual says something like "roughly 1/2 MOA" but I'm going off of my poor memory on that). Once I spent plenty of rounds figuring out the correct turret directions and got the POI to reasonably match my scopes original zero w/ the magnifier on, I found out that torqueing the set screw back down then throws it off again (both in elevation and windage). This led to an iterative process of loosening the screw, over-compensating the windage and elevation, then re-torqueing the screw in an attempt to have it end up sharing the same (approximately the same) zero as the base optic. After what I thought was too many rounds, I got it close enough.
Another thing I wasn't expecting was that this affected my diopter setting. When I first mounted this magnifier, the reticle and target were not both in focus any longer. I had to adjust my diopter to get the reticle and target in the same focal plane, then when removing it the original optic was out of whack. Ultimately, I landed on a diopter setting that gives me a reasonable compromise between clarity with the magnifier and without the magnifier, but it's not quite perfect either way. Ideally, I would have liked it if this was able to be installed/removed w/out changing the optic's focus.
Now for the positives...Once I spent two hours and too much ammo ($$) setting this up, I shot groups with and without it, removing and reinstalling it, and it seemed to repeat its zero pretty well. Also, I didn't have any eye relief problems, because I re-set my eye relief w/ this mounted and the scope on max. magnification before heading to the range. With the magnifier on, I still had a full clear view through the optic w/ a good cheek weld. If your optic's original eye relief is dialed in correctly to begin with, you probably won't have any problems with it after mounting this.
I'll probably need some more time with this thing to settle on how I feel about it, but after my first range trip, it left me a little less than satisfied because I went to the range to relax and unwind, but ended up getting frustrated trying to guess at where the POI was going to end up after torqueing the set screw to lock the zero.
Pros:
  • extra magnification, repeatable zero after un-mounting and re-mounting
Cons:
  • more difficult to zero than a regular scope, changes diopter setting (focus)
Best Used for:
  • increasing magnification of LPVO
