none's Review of Ultradot Matchdot 2 1x30mm Red Dot Sight
First of all the only reason that Optics Planet has a Product Support Department is to make sure there is no problem in getting your money. Do not make an assumption that this company has the same integrity as Amazon.com. Optics Planet has substituted “policy” for integrity and firmly believes that the two are one in the same. They said that it was not their problem and to call the manufacture. This experience has taught me a lesson in that the cheapest price is not necessarily the best way to go. After "passing the buck" four times I finally got a number where I could talk to a human being at Ultradot. I was told that the problem was with my eyes and not the Matchdot. The Ultradot Matchdot 2 Red Dot sight model has great reviews. What they do not tell you is that in order to use the capabilities of this sight one must have perfect 20/20 vision. More than that, one must have almost perfect corneal curvature. The result of having even minimal astigmatism is that the available sight picture, dots and circles, are blurred and distorted. Using one's standard corrective glasses will not help, at least in my case. There is no built in diopter adjustment. After further investigation on the Ultradot web Site, in the FAQ section, they mention the astigmatism problem, but it is buried within the site. I was told, by the rep at Ultradot, to either put the sight on ebay, or take the sight to an eye doctor and have a special set of glasses made to correct the problem (that is what the three gun shooters do, so I was told) or send it back to Ultradot at my expense to make sure of the integrity. All of these "solutions" are unacceptable. The suggestion of taking the unit with me to the eye doctor is insulting. With the cost of glasses why would I want to do that, when, for less than the cost of a new pair of glasses I could have bought a red dot with the adjustment built in? I am as upset with my self as I am with the product in that I did not do a complete investigation prior to buying the Matchdot, but then again how was I to know. Never had this problem before. As a check I had seven people, who do not use glasses and have uncorrected 20/20 vision, look through and comment on the sight picture. Out of the seven only two said that the sight picture was clear and sharp. After several hours of research I found an excellent explanation for this posted by a retired optician on AR15.com. In a nut shell one can have 20/20 uncorrected vision, but still have corneal imperfections that will only be picked up when looking through something like the glass installed in the Ultradot. The Ultradot rep made that comment that their glass is superior and that if I bought a cheaper Red Dot I might not notice as much distortion due to the lesser quality of the glass. It blows me away that any customer rep from any company would give that kind of advice to a customer in this situation. Now that I am aware of the problem I found that the forum's are full of the same complaint. If Ultradot is proud of their product and their integrity why don't they bring this potential problem right up front on their web site and in their advertising? We all know the answer to that question. If I would have known this I would not have bought their product, but at the same time I would not have been left with such a bitter experience and would not have "blackballed" their product line for any future offerings. My suggestion to Ultradot is that they consider putting in a diopter adjustment. The tube is already threaded so why not replace the polarizer with a diopter. They would not have to spend any development cost on a lock in for the adjustment in that just moving the mounting ring a little aft and tightening it would clamp the adjuster in place. Not optimum, but it would work. In summary let the buyer be ware when buying this product. Even if you have good vision you will not be able to tell for certain that you will not get distortion until you mount up the sight at the spot where you feel comfortable and look through it. By this time if it is unacceptable it's too late...you own it. One last thing, most of the reviews I read were by "three gun shooters". These types are dedicated shootists with a budget designed to support that hobby and experimentation is part of the norm. I am just a plinker who has to find a balance between between buying ammo or top of the line equipment. Nothing wrong with having the means to buy the higher priced equipment, but in my case I have to try and buy the best for less and when one makes a mistake, especially when there is a common issue that is not discussed by the manufacture in an open and forthright manner, it hurts.
