I don't know how they did it. The material seems tough, but somehow isn't unbearable on triple digit heat+humidity days.
Pockets are well thought out. Good for conceal and carry without screaming tactical. Comfortable, practical, possibly stylish? I'm not 100% sure if I'm qualified for any style comments being dad-core. I will likely use these with or without conceal and carry.
I can't comment on long term durability. I'd imagine/hope they'll last a while and launder well. I purchased some generic, low cost shorts at a department store last year and they're already very ratty looking.
