CB's Review of Vertx Mens Phantom OPS Nylon/Cotton Nyco Rip-Stop Pant
I've been wearing Vertx pants for many years and I'm a big fan of the Vertx product line. In fact, I wear them pretty much every day, and have put them through their paces from the jungles of the Congo to the deserts of the Middle East to the mountains of Peru. They have never failed me in the field, and they also look sleek and professional when meeting clients in the city. This particular pair blew me away when they arrived, though. None of my previous pairs in khaki and ODG were anywhere near as tough as these appeared to be "out of the box". Taking them out of the packaging from Optics Planet, they felt heavy and stiff, almost like the way a brand new pair of Levis used to feel back in the day... I thought I was in for an uncomfortable break-in period. I put them on, and yes, they definitely felt heavier and thicker than my other pairs, but they still fit very well and felt great. I've been wearing them for a couple of months now, and they've been through the wash a number of times, but they are still breaking in - wearing like iron! Still tough, but always comfortable. As for the grey Kryptek pattern - I bought it for a specific purpose, and it works well for me for that purpose (my colleagues like it, too), but I don't wear this pair casually as it screams...um, something not casual... The pattern of varying grays and black is fairly subtle from a distance, but very distinct and unconventional up close. One of my favorite features of Vertx Phantom Ops pants is the design and arrangement of the pockets - which suit me far, far better than 5.11s or 24/7s - and I prefer the Phantom Ops to the other Vertx designs specifically because of the flapped back pockets and the narrow knife/tool/magazine pockets on either seam. With this particular pair, the heavier material makes the flaps on the back pockets and the cargo pockets slightly more stiff, but doesn't really make much of a difference in use. I am just as happy with this version as I have been with my other Vertx pants, and recommend them highly, especially for really hard use!
Pros:
Comfortable
Not baggy
Wear like iron
Pocket design and placement
Cons:
Flapped pockets are a little stiff
Best Used for:
hard use
Would Recommend:
Yes
