Chewy's Review of VISM Ncstar Universal Semi-Auto Pistol Slide Front & Rear Sight Tool

Looking around for a sight pusher to do both front and rear sights with little hassle leaves much to be desired. You see many of the two piece design on ebay with different names attached. There are also many that are fabricated by individuals at a low price. Then I stumbled upon this thing. What sealed the deal for me is the front sight part. You never really want to push or hit a front sight on the blade. If it breaks off then you're back to the vice and punch. This unit has steel tangs designed to push a front sight via the base. It is a robust piece of machinery that was well thought out. Tools like this have their limitations as do all tools really. I would say the only thing "better" would be the MGW pro for $300. But obviously if you're reading this then that is not what you're after. This one was designed for the home enthusiast who changes sights periodically vs someone who is a full on gunsmith. Or maybe a gunsmith loves this model! Up to you. You will find the center hold down for the top of the slide to have a plastic cover over the screw. Be very careful screwing it down to hold the top of your slide. It can crack or break and leave an ugly mark on the top of the slide. As one user on YouTube suggested electrical tape a nickel and place on top of your slide. I don't even turn the thing down to even touch the slide so it's a non issue for me.To me that's just a "what if" security measure and not meant to be an actual top clamp. Let's face it if you have a slide in a vice using a hammer and punch where's the top clamp?! The side clamps have polymer covers and one clamp side even has two magnets to aid in setting up the slide. So another plus here is not having to have cardboard or pieces of wood between the slide and clamps. There is even a spring tensioned center guide to aid in keeping the clamp straight when clamping the slide! I was highly impressed to see four bronze bushings where the threaded rods feed through! Search this model on YouTube and come to your own conclusion for your needs. If you change a whole bunch of sights daily I would opt for the MGW but for the vast majority of us this thing is an heirloom. It's well built and does a great job. It comes with a zippered case with foam form fitted packaging. If you take care of it and respect what it is like anything else it will serve you well. NcStar seems to have an excellent reputation of backing up their stuff and there's a video on that too with a customer and his experience. For the good price of this one at Optics Planet I promise you're not going to find better. I do not regret this purchase one bit. I highly recommend it.
Pros:
  • Well designed, Robust, Great Price, easy to use
Cons:
  • No instruction manual, plastic tip on top threaded hold down can Crack and damage the side
Would Recommend: Yes
