Rickey Holtsclaw's Review of Vortex OPMOD StrikeFire II 1x30mm Reflex Red Dot Sight

First of all, I wanted to thank Optics Planet for stepping-up to the plate with very competitive pricing; generous inventory for the AR15 affectionado; free shipping; PayPal option; incredible warranty on the products they retail; return customer discounts; appreciation for first responders; excellent customer service with representatives that are polite and professional. I plan to make Optics Planet a first-stop when shopping for weapon parts and accessories from this point forward.

Review of the StrikeFire II OPMOD,

The Strikfire II OPMOD is a beautiful, well crafted, red dot sight that includes a cantilever mount/picatinny rail offering lower 1/3 co-witness. Mine is presently mounted on a 10.5" AR pistol and my only concern is its size, perhaps slightly larger than my ACOG, but that concern is trivial as this sight was constructed for the long haul; The Strikefire II appears tough and should resist the elements with ease if exposed. I was leaning toward installing my Holosun 407 RDO on a riser mount because I prefer the "shake awake" option as opposed to manually turning my red dot sights on-and-off; while I like the minimalist feel of the small red dot sights I'm concerned about using the rather exposed compact pistol sights on my AR's due to an intermittent distortion in the dot when exposed to rain...this is NOT a concern with the Strikfire II as the optic's internals are well protected and the lenses are also protected with flip-up caps. The battery compartment is easily accessible and there is no need to remove the sight to replace the battery. All function buttons and control options are easy to access and covered with rubber to prevent penetration by moister/rain/elements. In my old age, I suffer from an astigmatism which makes the red dot and especially the greed dot appear as a grape cluster but my son, with excellent vision, confirmed that the red and green dots were truly a "dot" and not a cluster. Sighting-in the StrikeFire was a breeze...I actually manipulated the windage/elevation knobs more than necessary as the Strikerfire was almost zeroed out of the box. It was very smart engineering by Vortex to make their windage and elevation covers with a protrusion on the cover itself that fits perfectly into the adjustment knobs for zeroing the sight. I had forgotten to pack a screwdriver in my bag but was pleased to see the adjustment knob option on each cap. Each click on the adjustment knob is sure and discernable and can be felt easily. The FDE color on the OPMOD is flawless and rather unique. The lenses appear to be of excellent quality glass, especially at this price point. The glass may not be the clarity of my ACOG but it's very good. Adjustments relevant to dot size and color are easily accessible. The option to use a red dot or green dot is nice but at this point I find the red dot more to my liking. I am a little concerned that the cantilever mount has only one attach point on the scope (six-screws) and one on the picatinny rail but the rail attach point seems to be holding well; I did find it necessary to re-torque/re-tighten the six-screws that hold the scope to the base mount. These screws worked loose during my sighting-in session at the range (maybe 50-rounds of 62G green tip) and they may require a touch of blue thread-locker to secure them without worry. Overall and at this point in my experience with the Vortex OPMOD Strikerfire II I'm impressed and time will tell if the scope holds-up to use but it's comforting to know that both Vortex and Optics Planet stand behind their products with excellent warranties. You would be hard pressed to find a better red-dot for your AR around the $200.00 mark or even the $300.00 mark.
Pros:
  • Ease of use-lense clarity-engineering-warranty
Cons:
  • Size - rather large but packed with features
Best Used for:
  • Hunting-personal defense-competition
