CaliforniaGunner's Review of Vortex OPMOD Viper 1x24mm Reflex Red Dot Sight
Decent red dot. Worth it when they are priced ~$150. Good inexpensive option if you just don't think optics should cost more than your monthly utility bills. Zeroing is a basic/simple system with locking screws on the back, which could be blocked on a pistol if you have a rear sight behind it. You would have to remove the rear sight to adjust (a problem for some).-----------DONT GET THE OPMOD VERSION... The coating on my OPMOD Viper came off just from use of the rubber cover. Yes, putting the cover on for storage and taking the cover off just a few times removed about 35% of the OPMOD colored paint and more keeps coming off. I have a black Viper and the coating is still intact with use of the cover. ---------- Only buy when under $175, you can get them for $150 or less. These are not worth $200+ IMO. Old tech, still useful, but dated. The picatinny mount: basic but solid. I haven't tested repeatability. _-------- My one big issue with the Viper (and a lot of other red dots), is the auto off feature. It turns off after 14hrs if you don't push the buttons. This makes it unusable for a dedicated HD gun (IMO). The battery life on a medium setting could last a year so I don't see why it doesn't have an always-on option. For HD I need an optic that is just on when I pick up the gun because I WILL NOT REMEMBER to turn it on (That's why I like Prism Scopes). There should be an option to disable the auto off feature. I would pay an extra $30 for that. If they insist on adding auto off with no auto on, more companies need to make the an option to set the optic to always an. So frustrating. Another thing I don't like, made in China. Vortex should move their cheap optics production to Taiwan. (And yes, I've heard all the proChina comments from all the proChina hypocrites, but I try when possible not to fund an opressive country that would like to destroy my way of life and has played a large part in the decline of my country. I buy what I want and I prefer to not fund the CCP, with the occasional exception if unavoidable, like trying out the Viper... and the PA MicroPrisms are just so good. Those purchases also fund US companies. I can choose and pick what I want to buy. My phone is NOT made in China, neither is my TV. Your proCommunist/proDictatorship opinion is just that, your opinion, and I'm not interested in it. To those who read this far and only came for the review, my apologies for the rant.)
Pros:
- Reliable/durable (for a cheap China made red dot), common footprint, inexpensive when on sale, dot is easy to see in daylight, zeroing is fairly easy, OP and Vortex are both US companies.
Cons:
- No option for always on, OPMOD coating comes off easy, made in China, if you have a pistol with a rear sight that sits behind the red dot the windage/elevation lock screws might be blocked.
Best Used for:
- Target shooting, hunting, CCW if you can remember to turn it on every morning, maybe competition, back up sight.
