christian's Review of Vortex Razor HD LER Wide Angle Eyepiece

This review is about the Razor HD LER Wide Angle Eyepiece mounted on the RAZOR HD 27-60 X 85 spotting scope.I use for birding and have owned it for 12 month. This eyepiece differ from the standard 27-60 eyepiece i many ways, first of all, it a fixed 22 x-type with no zoom. It deliver a much brighter image with clarity and contrast normally only found in high-end Leica and Svarwowski optics. It produces a stunning wide angle view with a "being there" feeling. It is sharp to the edge and handels backlight with a minimum of flare although minor chromatic aberations (purple) occurs in extreme backlight settings. Due to the L.E.R nature it is suitable for people wearing glasses with full view maintained. The only cons is that reflections occurs if the sun is behind you or shines in from the sides. Vortex do not offer an eye-shield so I had bought a third part unit to solve this problem. The 27-60 x eyepiece is very versatile due to the zoom option, but I primarily use 22 x wide angle unit because of its outstanding low light performance. In this regard it is second to none even compared to the bedst German and Austrian brands. The field of view are both in real meters and in apparently terms generous and offers a relaxed feeling even when used for serveral hours.
Pros:
  • Generous Field of View
  • Ultra bright
  • Ultra sharp
  • outstanding low light performance
Cons:
  • reflection if the sun is behind you
  • No eye-shield
Best Used for:
  • Birding
