Juice Stain's Review of Warne 22 Caliber Medium Scope Rings

I saw on a rimfire forum that these rings were mounted to a CZ 455 and thought they might work well on mine. They do work well, better than I could ever have expected.

I like that the design has a separate screw for the dovetail mounts and for the scope retention. It's important that you can tighten these separately-- there are some ring designs that use one screw (or two) to do both functions, and it's a bad idea.

I also like that the rings are steel, not aluminum. This is important for a couple reasons. First, thread stripping is far less likely to be a problem with steel. Also, repeatability of torque/tension is far better in steel than in aluminum.

The quality of the machine work is very, very good. You can tell as you tighten the screws that the threads are well-formed and the machining is spot-on.

Finally, the use of a Torx screw instead of outdated interfaces like Hex (allen), Phillips, or slotted is important. This assures you will be able to to get more accurate torque, less hassle, and longer life from the rings because the screws heads won't strip.

The 0.400" Height of these rings is perfect for a CZ455 because it get the scope as low as it can be and still clear the bolt handle. With my modest Nikon, the clearance is less than a millimeter, and I can force the bolt to touch the scope if I wish. But it doesn't interfere with cycling the action, and there's no evidence on the scope of recurring contact, so normal cycling will not be constantly banging up the scope.

However-- if you intend to use a scope that has a larger ocular, CHECK THE CLEARANCE. These rings might be too low to use that big eyepiece. For me, it's right at that ideal spot where it's as low as it can go and still clear.

That's saved me the hassle of adding a cheek riser.

Finally, there's the price. Many quality scope rings are more than double the cost of these Warne rings, some even triple. I struggle to see how one can justify the extra expense of a Talley or Badger ring when these Warnes do so well for a 1" scope. I'm sure they are plenty strong and stiff enough for any scope in this tube size.

They are overkill for a rimfire scope and rimfire recoil, but not overkill on price or quality. I couldn't be more pleased with them overall.

  • Quality
  • Design
  • fitment
  • Material
Cons:
  • None
