Excellent scope leveling solution - Wheeler Engineering Professional Reticle Leveling System

FD's Review of Wheeler Engineering Professional Reticle Leveling System
I purchased the Wheeler Professional Reticle Leveling System after having used a couple of other solutions that were not providing satisfactory results. The other solutions I have tried are a grid that attaches to the rifle via a dowel inserted into the bore (which you would then line up the reticle with), and a kit similar to the popular level-level-level. This system is superior to both of those, but there still is a place in your toolbox for a grid-type reticle leveler for reasons that I'll get to in a moment.
I like this system because the barrel mounted level can be attached to the rifle and then very finely tuned to a precise point, and it will keep that point because it is firmly secured. The rear level has a metal body that provides a very smooth surface to place on the top turret of the scope to provide a reference point. Both other systems are lacking in this regard. The grid system is difficult to level with the rifle itself because there is no reliable reference point (such as the bubble level itself). You essentially have to "eyeball" the grid to the rifle to make sure they are square with each other before leveling the scope to the grid, and "eyeballing" anything is going to be no more precise than just "eyeballing" the crosshairs into alignment without the grid. The level-level-level is good but falls short on rifles where there may not be a convenient flat surface to place all of the levels. For example, rifles without a rail or bolt action rifles with three-lug bolts that don't have two lug guides square with the receiver. Also, none of the loose levels are firmly secured to the rifle and can move quite easily. This wheeler system resolves all of these issues and is a superior solution for leveling scopes.
As I mentioned earlier, there is still a place in your toolbox for a grid-type reticle leveling tool. I have been through quite a few scopes in my lifetime and unless you are purchasing very high-end optics there is a possibility that your reticle may not be perfectly square with the scope body. Some of the more reputable manufacturers actually allow up to 3% error in optics. If you have one of these scopes then you will have to make a decision on whether to level the scope body itself or level the reticle with the rifle since you will not be able to level both. This is where having a grid tool becomes useful. This Wheeler tool only facilitates leveling the scope body itself to the rifle, while a grid is useful for leveling the reticle itself. I do suggest that whatever grid system you purchase (if any) has a bubble level reference point built in so that you can accurately square the grid with the rifle itself.
All things considered this is the best system I have tried for leveling a scope body with a rifle. I recommend it to anyone who wants to mount an optic and have it properly squared with the rifle it is on. Having this kit and a well-designed grid-type leveler to accompany it would equip you for mounting virtually any scope to any rifle with perfect alignment.
