Michael Webb's Review of Wiley X Rx Prescription Lenses Wiley X SG-1 Sunglasses / Goggles w/ RX Lenses

I'm not a professional responder or wanna-be. I am, however; a member of a CERT team and preparing for a NASAR-certified Search and Rescue Program to come online through the same local government that will draw from the CERT rank and file. I pend every minute I can outdoors and learned in my old age wisdom that sunglasses have to be a part of your outfit. I simply have bad eyesight and a need to see clearly while being very active. I can wear contacts and sunglasses but I also wanted the option of not wearing contacts and being outside.

I did a lot of research and found that the motorcycle-style combo goggles/sunglasses would fit my lifestyle. After a lot of research I narrowed my field to Bobster and Wiley-X. I have some bad vision and had to choose from very few providers who can make coke-bottle-bottom thick lenses, your mileage may vary. OpticsPlanet did an excellent job of helping me with that research, both online and by email support.

I chose the Wiley-X SG1 platform because of the full-goggle type of protection one can get with a wrapped frame. The frame itself is feather-lite but very durable. It is made from a polymer or plastic that means if you accidentally sit on them or other bad things, they take the punishment with warping or bending. The temple pieces of the sunglasses hold together, after two years of switching from goggle-style to sunglass-style everything fits tight.

I wear the sunglasses while driving and interacting, and I wear the goggles whenever I need the frames to stay put on my face: bike riding, very physical activity, using power tools outdoors, etc. I used the goggle-style so much that I wore the gaskets out, but it took two years for that to happen. The replacements weren't just a do-it-yourself regluing of the gaskets but a complete new interchangeable piece that you just popped your prescription lens in.

The first go-round I opted for polarized bifocals and they worked perfectly. The second go-round I went with single vision and the non-polarized gradient tint and I'm not really missing anything. I live in Texas and there will *always* be glare.

On the second prescription set OpticPlanet used a newer lens that is thinner -- no more coke-bottle-bottom sticking out -- and I am really happy with it. It's a thinner lens, so my peripheral vision suffers from not being able to grind out to the edge, but you can always turn your head. It took one trip in my car to get used to checking side mirrors that way. But I'm a +6 in one eye which usually means no sunglasses.

OpticsPlanet had flat out the best price on the prescription. But then everything goes to Wiley anyways so you're just paying a markup when you shop elsewhere. Take into consideration that OpticsPlanet won't accept your FSA credit card, but they will generate an itemized invoice so you can file a claim.

The new bridge piece is a *must have* as it gets the sunglasses to sit better without sliding down. And you can pop it off when you need to have the frame tighter to your face.

I don't know what else to tell you. Get a pair and you'll be like me coming back to OpticsPlanet for a regular prescription refill.
