James D's Review of XTS Tactical Mini 1 x Red Dot Sight, 2 MOA Illuminated Red Dot Reticle

The only thing "Xtreme" about this red dot is how extremely poorly constructed it is, that it would break after fewer than 400 rds of .22LR.

When I first got this sight, my feelings were mixed - the quality was typical for this price point, but the two brightness settings were very poor - one extremely dim, and one not bright enough for daylight shooting. I should have returned it right then, but I opted instead to change the battery (luckily they included a spare) and that improved the brightness marginally.

I decided to try it and mounted it to my Ruger 22/45 since it would only be used on an indoor range anyway.

At first, it performed as expected. But at the end of my second range session with it, my accuracy started to degrade. I chalked it up to poor performance on my part and stowed it for next time.

On my third range trip, I brought my sister to shoot, and she couldn't' group at all - we're talking a 10" spread at 3 yards. She said she had difficulty finding the dot within the sight. I removed the sight and she shot with the irons, resulting in typical good groups. When I examined the sight, I discovered that the lens itself had broken free of the metal housing, and was now moving loosely within the sight body, resulting in the poor accuracy.

Needless to say I'm very disappointed that this sight could not withstand even a bulk box of .22LR before breaking. I shudder to think of what even higher calibers might do to its lens. As it stands, I'd say the only positive feature of this sight is its knurled/slotted tightening knob, so you can remove it without tools in the field when it invariably fails you.

Since I can't return it, I'm going to try to clean it up and epoxy the lens back in place. Hopefully that will lead to something useable. But don't make my mistake and save your money towards something higher quality.
Pros:
  • Inexpensive
  • Easy to remove/replace
Cons:
  • Poor construction quality
  • Dim
Best Used for:
  • Paperweight
  • Toys.
