I bought this device about six months ago, have been using it mostly for animal observation and terrain surveillence.
The Ranger Pro has an advanced program that enables you to conduct observation even in total darkness, with the large IR on - some 150-170yards are guranteed. If you have some artificial light like 1/4 Moon and stars in the sky, viewing range increases up to 400, in some cases 500yards. At this distance you will surely be able to recognize a human.
The image is sharp and has good contrast. You can adjust the sensitivity (brightness) of the display, which is very helpful.
Unfortunately, the device is quite power consuming, one always have to keep an extra set of batteries in the pocket. However using rechargeable batteries is more advantageous, they will provide up to 3-4 hours of steady operation with the large IR constantly on. Luckily the Ranger Pro comes with a 12V car adaptor and a mains lead which lets you work with the device from dusk till dawn. By the way it's intended for day use too which is great too. No fear to burn the tube because it uses a CCD chip instead. By the way, b&w image does not strain eyes, unlike in the analog night devices with a tube.
On the whole, it's a valuable thing, no regrets, only satisfaction.
Pros: great performace, good image in total darkness, excellent IR,
Cons: power consuming, it takes time to leran operation
