The .32 Winchester Special cartridge is essentially a necked-up version of the .30-30 Win. Designed in 1901 for use in lever-action rifles, the bigger bullet was marketed as a harder-hitting upgrade. However, the popularity never really took off as deer hunters didn't see much advantage, and .30-30 ammo had already established itself as a good caliber in the preceding six years.
The biggest difference between the .30-30 and .32 Special is the bullet diameter. The .30-30 has a .308-inch bullet, and the 32 WS has a 0.321 bullet. This was to create a larger wound when hunting, particularly when hunting deer. Ballistics are similar, but when compared using an exact same grain weight bullet, it turns out the .30-30 has greater penetration. Also, the 32 Win. Special has roughly 5 to 10 percent more ft-lb (foot-pounds) energy at closer ranges. At longer ranges, the heavier bullet of the .32 drops faster and more dramatically than the .30.
They sure do! Modern manufacturers like Hornady, Remington, and Federal all make 32 Special ammo. It can be hard to find since it's a less common cartridge and isn't in constant mass production like .233 Remington, .30-06, and a whole bunch of other popular calibers. The best bet is to buy it up when you see it in stock and to place a backorder when you don't. This can take some patience, but if you're not handloading or reloading your own ammo and you have a 32 Win. Special, it'll be well worth the wait.
As a brush gun for deer and other mid-sized game, it's an excellent round. Ammunition isn't offered in as many varieties as other calibers like the .30-30 Winchester, but it is available. Handloaders and reloaders who aren't limited by factory loads have enjoyed tinkering with it depending on what they're looking to do.
