There are few calibers in the world like the 454 Casull (sometimes known as a 454 Magnum). With 5 times the recoil of a .45 Long Colt, and 75% more than a .44 Mag, it's definitely a handful and not for everyone. A 454 bullet in 300gr can deliver a muzzle velocity of 1,650 fps (feet per second) and whopping muzzle energy of over 1,800 ft.-lb (foot-pounds). That's a serious handgun. Invented as a wildcat cartridge in 1958, it didn't hit the commercial market until 1983. The design is an elongated .45 Long Colt case, so those can be fired through the revolvers as a lighter load for practice. The 454 round is used to hunt a lot of big game animal in North America, including deer, elk, moose, and bears. For this reason, it's a favorite bear-defense cartridge for people who live in Grizzly country, as it packs a huge punch that can protect you at close- to medium-range.
