The 460 Magnum has a bullet diameter of 0.452 inches (11.5 mm). The parent cartridge is a .454 Casull, but the straight-walled rimmed case has been lengthened to 1.80 inches (46 mm) from the 454's 1.383 inches (35.1 mm). The full name of the caliber as designated by SAAMI (Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute, Inc) is "460 S&W Magnum" and the official abbreviation is "460 S&W Mag."

How accurate is a 460 Smith & Wesson?

Specifically designed for big game handgun hunting, the 460 S&W Mag is designed to be very accurate. Of course, this will vary by the firearm and the load being used. Using the standard 8.375-inch barrel and a 200-grain bullet, groups of 1.5 inches can be achieved at 100 yards. Many online shooters report sub-MOA accuracy at 50 yards out to 100 yards, depending on the gun, the rest, weather conditions, etc. S&W's ballistic figures indicate that a 200gr bullet can be sighted in at 200 yards and achieve +/- 5 inches rise/drop at 250 yards.

Can you shoot 454 out of 460?

Yes, with most models, but check the manufacturer's specifications first. For example, many long guns are specifically chambered only for 460 ammo, and other guns may have other design elements that make them ill-advised. However, with most of the revolvers on the market, the 460 S&W Mag can fire .454 Casull. They can also fire 45 Long Colt, and the mostly obsolete .45 Schofield (45 S&W), although either of those will affect the accuracy. A lot of people wonder if you can shoot .45 ACP or .410 bore shotshells through a 460, but they're not designed for that and would require significant modification. Since there are plenty of other handguns on the market that will accept variations of .45 Long Colt, .45 ACP, and .410 bore, it's preferable to simply buy an appropriate gun for your needs.
