What Do You Need for Whitetail Hunting?

Whitetails are most often hunted from a deer stand set up in the trees along the edges of fields or meadows. They're typically a short-range hunt, so hunters will bowhunt or use mid-powered rifles. Often they'll use slugs or buckshot out of shotguns, too. If there aren't sufficiently strong trees, or if the hunter wants a more secure spot than a treestand, a tripod deer stand can be the perfect solution as they're standalone units. A deer blind can be used with or without a stand, and they come in many forms. They can be improvised with highly portable camouflage netting, popups similar to tents, or a watchtower-style that are on legs and have an enclosed box that hunters sit in for concealment and a higher vantage point. A deer call is often used to draw them into the area and keep their attention long enough to get into the hunter's range for a clear shot, like those made by Primos and Hunter's Specialties. They simulate the different noises deer make to communicate with each other and help to distract them from human presence. In combination with calls, many hunters will also use a life-like deer decoy to further attract the animals and put them at ease.

What Is the Best Deer Hunting Gear for Mule Deer?

Archery hunting for mule deer will often use the same techniques as whitetail hunting, using blinds, stands, calls, and some decoys. However, due to the open spaces and brushy areas that are often prime mule deer habitat, hunters will use a technique called "spot-and-stalk." A bowhunter will still use calls, but instead of sitting in one fixed location waiting for the deer to come to them, they'll use spotting scopes or binoculars to locate deer and then slowly approach them from upwind to throw off their scent. Short-range firearms like shotguns are uncommon for mule deer, and most hunters prefer to use medium-power to high-powered centerfire rifles to get them at ranges of 100-500 yards. Hunting mule deer with guns also uses spot-and-stalk methods but rarely relies on blinds or decoys due to the terrain and distances they may travel in a single day. Due to all of the hiking that can be involved, Hunting Packs are even more essential for mule deer hunting.
