A pistol stabilizing brace, more commonly known as just a pistol brace, was originally developed by SB Tactical to help disabled shooters grasp their weapons better. Designed to allow shorter-barreled firearms to be braced against the shooter’s forearm, they usually have an arm strap to secure the weapon and give the shooter more control. They are most commonly used on AR pistols, but you can attach a brace to any handgun or AK pistol as well. For AR15 pistols, the brace attaches to a pistol buffer tube similarly to how a stock attaches to the buffer tube of a carbine or rifle. However, if you have a personal defense weapon (PDW), you cannot attach a stock to it, as this qualifies the weapon as a short-barreled rifle, which is outlawed by the NFA and can draw the ire of the ATF. If you’re looking to upgrade your PCC with a new brace, here is more about what you should know.![]()
The primary benefit of using a pistol stabilizing brace is that it helps you maintain your accuracy while shooting from the hip, as these weapons are not designed to be shouldered. By fastening the arm brace to your body, you have much more control over your AK or AR pistol. Plus, from this position, it is much easier to look through a red dot sight, if you decided to mount one to a picatinny rail.
The designs of the two parts are very different, as well as the intent with which shooters use each one. For example, a rifle stock generally has more surface area on the end, as well as a butt pad, which allows the shooter to shoulder the weapon comfortably. On the other hand, a pistol brace is smaller, shorter, and often has less mass and surface area. This is because the smaller it is, the easier it is for the shooter to hold the weapon with one hand and brace it against their arm.
