For certain people, the Small of Back Holster may be just the handgun concealed carry option they're looking for. It's still a waistband holster, but it offers more concealability than many other OWB (Outside the WaistBand holster) or even IWB holster (Inside WaistBand Holster) designs.![]()
An SOB holster (Small Of Back holster) refers to a belt holster that is worn right where the name implies: the small of the back. If you picture the center belt loop at the back of your pants that sits right along your spine, that's where a Small of Back holster typically rides. This is also known as the 6 o'clock position, although some do carry them in the 5 o'clock position (7 o'clock position for left-hand).
This is a subject of some debate among EDC (Every-Day Carry) groups. Small of Back holsters can be very uncomfortable if you spend a lot of your day sitting in chairs or driving, and cannot be safely drawn from that position. However, some horseback and ATV riders do like them because they can be carried comfortably and easily drawn from that kind of seating without a backrest and don't press against the legs or belly in a riding position.
Another application of a Small of Back Holster is when concealed carry is beneath a suit jacket or similar garment. This gives the wearer more freedom of movement without the sort of accidental exposure that a traditional hip holster or shoulder holster presents if the jacket falls open.
Small of Back Holsters are very good for small-frame backup guns, carried in the event that the main concealed carry handgun is compromised in any way (out of ammo, jam that can't be cleared, out of reach, etc.). Something like a snubby .38 revolver or micro-frame 9mm semi-auto could definitely ride comfortably in a Small of Back Holster.
Provided the person practices their draw regularly (which should be done with anything having to do with guns), Small of Back carry is a safe method of concealed carry. Care must be taken to practice in normal clothing to adjust for any snagging that needs to be overcome. One must also ensure they're not flagging (pointing the gun's muzzle at) themselves or others around them. This is why drawing from small of the back using the palm-in method should be used. Using a palm-out method has a much higher chance of flagging.
