The actual expansion of the GameKing/GameChanger bullet depends on the length of the target and the distance it is viewed from. For long-range targets, the majority of the expansion of the projectile is controlled by the stretch of the boat tail, but a pocket of unstable material under the tip of the projectile causes it to expand faster. This rapid expansion causes the petals to spread outward in a starburst fashion. The majority of the petals are retained by the ogive, which produces the famous Sierra secant roundtip shape. The secant ogive allows the projectile to retain speed and energy better than a hollow point does. A special alloy developed by Sierra specifically designed this bullet to achieve the maximum expansion. Although they are slightly thinner than the MatchKing bullets, GameKing and GameChanger are the same. The former are designed to withstand the rigors of today's high-volume handguns. One of the ways that shooters try to cheat is by loading a less than optimal round in the projectile. The secant ogive design allows the projectile to travel a greater distance without deforming or tangling. The more they travel, the more energy is transferred to the tip of the projectile where it can then expand and mushroom. Sierra recommends a speed load for these GameKing/GameChanger bullets. These bullets do not meet the stringent requirements for wildcat loads.
