Looking for small-caliber ammo to help get rid of pesky varmints? If you're planning on learning to shoot or teaching to shoot, then the SK Rimfire Ammunition is the right choice for shooters like you!image

What is SK Rimfire Ammunition?

Rimfire ammunition has a metallic firearm cartridge. The primer is located in a hollow surrounding rim protruding from the base of its casing. The cartridge's rim is expanded and flattened the end section of the case. When the trigger is pulled, the gun's firing pin will strike and crush the rim against the edge of the barrel breech, sparking the primer compound within the rim and igniting the propellant within the case. The priming compound is filled into the trough cavity inside the rim. The case is then filled with propellant powder and sealed off by the projectile. Rimfire ammo from .44 caliber (actually .45 caliber) up to .56 caliber was once standard when black powder was used as a propellant. Rimfire cartridges were once limited to low pressures because the case must be thin enough so that the firing pin could crush the rim and ignite the primer. Now modern rimfire ammo uses a smokeless powder, which generates much higher pressures and tends to be of .22 caliber (5.5 mm) or smaller. This also means that rimfire firearms can be very light and inexpensive.

Although not as widely used as before, there are a few small-caliber firearms that use rimfire ammo

  • .22 Short this caliber is used in some handguns such as the Rohm RG10 and NAA Mini
  • .22 Long Rifle is the starting point for most rookie shooters and, as such, the most popular round currently on the market
  • .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire something between .22 long rifle ammo and .223 (centerfire), often used to hunt vermin
  • .17 Hornady Mach 2 is smaller than .224 LR ammunition but offers higher power, not that popular among the shooting community
  • .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire shoots flatter and provides more power than .22 Long Rifle

Centerfire vs. Rimfire Ammo

Centerfire and rimfire ammo are similar in many ways. Rimfire does not have a primer because the rim is damaged after firing, so you cannot reload them, which is the biggest downfall to using rimfire ammunition. Centerfire allows for salvaging and reloading the casing multiple times over. Rimfire ammunition is also subject is misfiring due to a manufacturing error. When the primer is added, the distribution around the rim is not 100% perfect, so, therefore, shooters can always expect a dud in a box of rounds. While you may not want to use this ammunition for hunting or self-defense, it is quiet ammo with zero recoils making it great for beginner shooters or if you enjoy target shooting.
