The cross section of the Damascus interlocking pattern interlocks with the 1095 carbon steel to create the tigers most advanced alloy, tungsten carbide. This special powdered metallurgy steel encapsulates a nitrogen based alloy (similar to nitrogen used in bullet casings). This special alloy was developed at the same time as the damascus was invented.
