In single-phase fermentations, the combs provide sufficient surface tension to prevent plugging and to allow one- or two-phase growth. Combs also prevent plugging of wells during sample processing, and their reduced diameters make the media easy to obtain from the combs. Individual polystyrene pages provide sufficient volume for a batch of mesophilic cultures. For more specialized microbiological techniques, such as phage typing, use the companion Compact PCR Micro-combs. The manual micro-combs are designed for use with standard blood micro-centrifuge (HMP) dishes, and are suitable for procedures using magnetic stirring or vibrating stirrers.
