Grade No. 5 Filter Paper is most commonly used in the separation of solids from water in both coarse and fine filter presses. Grading is based on weight of the solids removed; if paper becomes darker or lighter during the rinsing process, the color of the paper is also changed. The advantages of this method of separating solids from water are that the paper becomes less soluble in acidic or alkaline solutions and does not change the rheology of the water. This grade of paper can also be used for the clarification of sewage and sludges from sludge dilution systems. The paper does not support the weight of the paper in binder form, but this quality of paper does provide the paper with a useful charring surface. Whatman Grade No. 5 Paper may also be used for the clarification of air through activated carbon and for the polishing of stainless steel and aluminium.
